Here's a list of real independent genre films and filmmakers from our fair state. Please check out their sites, show them some love, and most of all, make a point to go see their flicks.

Necrophobia - In my opinion, this is poised to be one of the breakout horror movies of the next few years...and I've only seen the rough cut. Writer/Director/Producer/Camera Guy/Editor/Digital FX guy Stacy Davidson has pretty much redefined the "independent movie" paradigm by doing most of the movie by his own damn self. Check it out.

Creatures of Earth/Rejected Films - These guys definitely get the "sick f*&k" award. If you like your horror dirty, nasty, mean, unpolished, brutal, and most of all, immoral, then look no further. COE/RF is nearing production on their next project, currently entitled Sway. Take a look, but consider yourself warned.

Zombitch - Come on, it's called Zombitch. What more do you need to know? Lunatic Fringe Pictures is involved, and I know they do good stuff.

Red Victoria - Keeping in the sub-genre of the distaff undead, Anthony Brownrigg (son of S.F.) is crafting a tale that sounds like a cross between The Dark Half, Ghost Story, and A Nightmare On Elm Street. It looks sexy, scary, and funny all at the same time. Should be a blast to watch.

The Quick And The Undead - Okay, so I'm going to Judas out a little bit here. The guys behind this flick are actually from Los Angeles, but they shot most of their movie in our fair state. I saw it at the Texas Frightmare Weekend in February, and it's definitely got that Lone Star vibe as well.

Sex Machine - Austin-based Asphalt Planet Motion Pictures looks to have produced a mind-blowing mishmash of horror, film-noir, crime thriller, and black comedy with Sex Machine, and it's getting rave reviews so far. Definitely not your average Hollywood pap.

Fringe Media - The crazy sons-of-bitches behind Pot Zombies.

The Tenth Axis - This is set to be the 2006 project for the Texas Indie Meet (which produced The Ancient in 2005). Basically a bunch of independent Texas filmmakers converge on Gainesville for one weekend, divvy up the production responsibilities, and each team goes off and lenses a portion of the movie. A neat idea that deserves some attention.

If you've got a project or production company you want me to throw up here, email us at upstartfilm@sbcglobal.net and we'll be happy to do so. Just make sure that you give all the other pages a chance as well. We have to support each other...because we are all one big, bloodthirsty, malajusted family.
